In other words, the job of planning for enterprise tech needs has never been more complex. Of course, in recent years, many have turned to the cloud for their enterprise data needs. And after the early days of cloud computing, IT teams quickly turned to multi-cloud solutions that promised to meet multiple business needs. That’s according to a new white paper from Digital Realty, in partnership with Krystallize Technologies.
But multi-cloud solutions don’t come without their own challenges. One of the biggest problems is the potential threats of sharing mission-critical workloads to the public Internet.
The new report from Digital Realty explores a computing solution that connects private infrastructure over a dedicated connection accessing public cloud resources while bypassing the internet. The report outlines tests, measurements and the value of such a computing solution.
According to the report, “The solution powers additional critical workloads and delivers faster results, all while improving network security and leveraging dedicated connectivity to the cloud from private architecture.”
Eighty-one percent of enterprises today have a multi-cloud strategy and use both public and private clouds.
Some of the complexities common to cloud deployments include figuring out the best way to support multiple clouds, creating a cost-effective cloud infrastructure, assuring the security of your clients and employees’ data, and much more. But there’s no shying away from these challenges for today’s enterprises, as the shift to cloud computing has changed the way we consume IT services, and spurred the rapid evolution of the hybrid cloud.
The report explores what multi-cloud support should look like. According to the white paper, 81 percent of enterprises today have a multi-cloud strategy and use both public and private clouds. A viable multi-cloud computing solution has to take the following factors into account, outlined further in the report:
- How asset latency impacts overall network performance
- Emphasis on direct, secure connectivity that radically improves network performance
- Measure and control the impact of network performance on business outcomes
Digital Realty also proposes three steps to better cloud performance:
- Choose a multi-cloud platform
- Take control of it with centralized governance
- Move to on-demand networking
Digital Realty also provides a use case focused on its Service Exchange tool, which works to enable enterprises design the secure service infrastructure that best supports your business needs. Users can add or subtract cloud services, networks, and partners as needed. The tool uses software-defined networking (SDN) to give enterprises real-time control over direct network connections.
Digital Realty explained that through Service Exchange, organizations can directly connect to major cloud providers in more than 185 Digital Realty and Megaport locations combined, spanning more than 40 metro markets on four continents.
